Project Details
The necessity to improve the drainage of Bachroun and Aaraara Rivers became apparent during construction of the South Motorway in that region.
The 100-year flood flow of Bachroun is 110 m3/sec and that of Aaraara is 40 m3/sec. Concrete channels were designed with the necessary energy dissipating and velocity control features, to cater for this flow and carry it across the motorway and the existing Beirut – Saida Road, to the sea.
The project involves draining rivers Bashroun and Aaraara adjacent to the South Motorway in Ghaziyeh. The study area extends from the point where each river meets the sea and upstream 1500 m in case of Bashroun and 1200 m in case of Aaraara.
Scope of work includes topographical works, supervision of the soil testing, hydrologic and hydraulic studies.
Various alternative solutions were compared in search of the optimal solution technically and economically. Drainage channels and culverts were designed including energy dissipaters and other details. The drainage channels were designed to take access – roads on both sides with a total length of about 3 km. Tender documents and expropriation files were also prepared
